Why page weight decides whether your website works in Syria

In Syria, a website is only as good as the connection it loads on, and most visitors arrive on a phone over mobile data or a shared home line. Keeping pages light — compressed WebP images, no autoplay video heroes, self-hosted fonts and minimal scripts — is what turns a visit into an enquiry. Testing on real local phones, not just an office laptop, is the only reliable check.

Why does page weight matter so much in Syria?

Most Syrian customers first meet a business on their phone, often over mobile data, a shared home connection or a network that changes in quality during the day. Every extra image, video and script has to travel over that connection before the page becomes usable. A design that feels instant on a fibre line abroad can feel broken in Homs or Latakia.

Page weight is simply the total size of everything a page downloads. When it is high, visitors wait, give up and go back to WhatsApp or a competitor's Facebook page. When it is low, the same visitor reads your offer, sees your location and calls. Performance is not a technical luxury here; it is the difference between a site that sells and one that only looks good in a presentation.

Images are usually the heaviest part of the page

On most business websites, photos account for the largest share of page weight. Uploading images straight from a camera or a phone gallery is the most common mistake we see: a single unedited photo can outweigh the rest of the page combined.

The fix is a simple, repeatable routine applied to every image before it goes live. Done consistently, it keeps a gallery-heavy site — a hotel, a real estate project, a clinic — light enough for mobile visitors without compromising how it looks.

  • Export photos in WebP, with JPEG only as a fallback where needed.
  • Resize each image to the largest width it will actually display at, not the original camera size.
  • Compress every file and check it visually; most photos lose nothing visible.
  • Use responsive images so phones download smaller versions than desktops.
  • Lazy-load images below the first screen so they only load when the visitor scrolls.
  • Use SVG for logos and icons instead of large PNG files.

Skip the autoplay video hero

Full-screen background videos are popular on agency portfolios, but they are one of the heaviest things a page can load, and they start downloading before the visitor has read a single word. On a weak connection the visitor often sees a blank or frozen header while the video buffers.

A better approach is a carefully chosen still image with a clear headline and a call to action. If video genuinely helps — a property walkthrough, a factory tour, a hotel room — place it lower on the page with a poster image and a play button, or embed it from YouTube so it loads only when someone chooses to watch.

Self-host fonts and keep scripts to what you need

Fonts loaded from third-party services add extra connections and can delay text from appearing, especially when those services are slow or inconsistent from inside Syria. Self-hosting a small number of font files on your own domain is more predictable. For bilingual sites, choose one Arabic and one Latin family and load only the weights you actually use.

Scripts deserve the same discipline. Chat widgets, tracking pixels, sliders, animation libraries and social feeds each add weight and processing time on the phone. Keep the ones that support a clear business goal and remove the rest.

  • Limit fonts to two families and a few weights.
  • Serve font files in WOFF2 from your own domain.
  • Replace heavy chat widgets with a simple WhatsApp link.
  • Remove plugins and scripts that no longer serve a purpose.
  • Avoid embedding full social media feeds on the homepage.

Hosting, caching and a CDN still matter

A light page also needs to be delivered efficiently. Good hosting with caching and a content delivery network stores copies of your site closer to visitors and serves repeat visits faster. Static or lightly dynamic sites are especially well suited to this and are easier to keep secure.

Which providers and payment methods work for a Syrian business varies and should be checked case by case. The principle stays the same: serve compressed files, cache what does not change, and avoid running a heavy database query for every page view when a cached version will do.

Test on real phones, not just your office laptop

Online speed tools are useful, but they do not show how your site feels on a mid-range Android phone on a Syrian mobile network in the evening. Ask your team, family or trusted customers to open the site on their own phones, in different cities and on different networks, and watch what happens.

Pay attention to what appears first, how long the main headline and contact buttons take to show, and whether anything jumps around as it loads. Repeat the test after every major update, because new photos and plugins tend to quietly add weight over time.

  • Test on at least one older or mid-range Android phone.
  • Try both mobile data and a home connection.
  • Check that phone, WhatsApp and map buttons appear early.
  • Repeat tests after adding galleries, videos or new features.

Building performance into the project from day one

Performance is far easier to design in than to fix later. It starts with decisions about layout, imagery and features in the planning stage, not with a plugin installed after launch. A short performance checklist agreed at the start keeps designers, developers and content teams aligned.

At Taswiqly we treat page weight as part of the brief for every website we build for Syrian businesses, alongside design and content. The goal is a site that looks premium and still loads comfortably for the customer standing outside your shop with one bar of signal.

FAQ

What is the single most effective way to speed up a business website in Syria?

Optimising images usually has the biggest impact. Converting photos to WebP, resizing them to their display size and compressing them can remove most of a page's unnecessary weight without any visible loss of quality.

Should my website have a video on the homepage?

Avoid autoplay background videos at the top of the page, because they load before visitors can read anything. If video adds real value, place it lower down with a poster image and let visitors choose to play it.

Why should fonts be self-hosted?

Self-hosted fonts load from your own domain, which removes extra third-party connections and makes text appear more reliably. For bilingual Arabic and English sites, loading only the font weights you use keeps the page lighter.
